Why do smart TV apps age worse than external devices?
Because the app store on a television follows the television's support lifecycle, not the app's. Player apps on TV platforms often lag their Android TV or Firestick versions by long periods, and older sets eventually stop receiving updates at all. That matters more than it sounds, because post-update regressions are a distinct recurring fault: a working setup breaks after an app or firmware update and stays broken until the next one. On an actively updated platform that resolves; on an abandoned TV platform it does not. How do you tell a TV fault from a service fault?

If an entire category is dark, that is server-side. If everything fails at once, look at your line, your player or the session. Then switch away from the failing channel and back. If audio plays with a black picture, that is a decoder issue and switching the player's video decoder usually clears it, which is a genuinely TV-side fix and one of the few that is.

Which settings on a TV are actually worth changing?
A short list. Set the player's buffer to none or minimum rather than large, which sounds wrong but reduces the stall-and-catch-up cycle on live feeds. Point the network settings at a public DNS resolver, which resolves a surprising share of intermittent load failures. Use the ethernet port if the set has one, since 1080p needs only 5 to 8 Mbps but tolerates variance poorly. Hide unused channel groups so the app holds a smaller list. Then concede the limit honestly: some buffering is oversold capacity on the service side and no TV setting reaches it.
