What is actually happening when the spinner appears?

A live channel is not a single file. It is a chain of short segments, each holding about six seconds of video, that the player requests one after another and stacks into a small queue. The spinner means that queue is empty and the next segment has not arrived. Two very different situations produce it. At the start of playback, the queue has to fill from zero, so a slow first request shows a spinner even on a fast line. Mid-stream, an empty queue means delivery fell behind after it had already been keeping up, which is a stall rather than a shortage. The same icon, two unrelated causes, and this is where most advice about buffering on Firestick goes wrong.

Why does it only stall on 4K content?

Because 4K asks for roughly three times the sustained bitrate of 1080p, around 15-25 Mbps against 5-8 Mbps, and it asks for it continuously rather than in bursts. A Wi-Fi link that averages 40 Mbps but dips to 12 for a second will carry 1080p through the dip and drop 4K on the floor. Codec matters too: HEVC delivers a comparable picture at roughly half the bitrate of H.264, so a 4K HEVC stream can be lighter on the line than an H.264 stream at the same resolution. If 4K is the only thing that stalls, the fix is the link rather than the device: 5 GHz, a shorter path to the router, or a wired adapter.

Why is the picture blocky instead of paused?

Blocking, smearing and green flashes are not buffering at all, even though people file them under the same heading. They mean segments are arriving but arriving damaged or incomplete, which is packet loss rather than insufficient throughput. Buffering pauses playback because the player has nothing to show. Blocking keeps playback moving because the player has something, just not all of it. The distinction matters because the fixes diverge: throughput problems respond to bandwidth and band changes, while loss responds to interference, cabling and routing. A speed test can pass cleanly while loss is severe, which is why the number on the screen tells you so little.

How do you tell a device fault from a stream fault?

Play the same channel on a phone on the same Wi-Fi. If the phone is clean and the Firestick stalls, the stream is fine and the device or its link is the problem. If both stall, the source or your line is the problem. Then reverse it: play a different channel on the Firestick. If that one is clean, the first stream is at fault and nothing local will help. Point the device at a public DNS resolver so the first lookup resolves quickly, and reduce the player's startup buffer so playback begins on fewer segments instead of waiting for a full queue.

A delivery gap longer than the queue. The player holds only a few seconds of video ahead, so any interruption longer than that buffer becomes a visible freeze rather than something the player can absorb quietly.

Remove the source of the gap rather than papering over it: move to 5 GHz or Ethernet, and set buffer to none so a dead session drops and reconnects instead of hanging on the last frame.

1080p is flawless but 4K stalls constantly

What is happening
Sustained bitrate. 4K needs roughly 15-25 Mbps held continuously, and a Wi-Fi link that averages well above that can still dip below it for a second at a time, which is enough to empty a six-second queue.
What fixes it
Wire the stick with an Ethernet adapter, or move it to 5 GHz with a clear line to the router. Where a channel offers an HEVC feed, it needs roughly half the bitrate of the H.264 equivalent.

Picture goes blocky or smeared but never actually pauses

What is happening
Packet loss, not bandwidth. Segments arrive with pieces missing, so the decoder renders what it has. Interference on 2.4 GHz, a damaged cable, or a congested hop upstream all produce this while a speed test still reports a large number.
What fixes it
Change the radio environment first: switch band, move the stick out from behind the TV panel, or go wired. If it persists on Ethernet, the loss is upstream and belongs with your ISP or the service.
