Decode capability is not the constraint on any current stick; memory is. A player app keeps the visible channel list resident, and a 54,000+ channel line trimmed carelessly can push past the point where a 1 GB device copes. That is why the Lite and older HD sticks feel sluggish in the guide even when playback itself is fine, and why the 4K and 4K Max, with 2 GB, feel steadier doing the same job. If you already own a 1 GB stick, hide unused country and category groups until the visible list is a few thousand entries and it will behave far better than the hardware suggests.

Less than most buyers assume, but more consistently than most connections deliver. A 4K feed needs roughly 15-25 Mbps sustained and consumes about 7 GB an hour, so a three-hour evening is around 21 GB. A 1080p feed needs about 5-8 Mbps and roughly 3 GB an hour. HEVC encoding reaches similar quality at about half the bitrate of H.264, which is why the same stick handles one 4K stream comfortably and chokes on another. Steadiness beats peak speed: a 200 Mbps line with heavy jitter at 9 p.m. stalls a 20 Mbps stream, while a clean 40 Mbps line carries it without complaint.

Usually, and for a reason that has nothing to do with speed. Wi-Fi delivers variable latency, and a live stream arrives as roughly six-second segments, so a jitter spike longer than the buffer becomes a visible freeze rather than a slight dip. A wired adapter removes that variability. If wiring is impractical, the 5 GHz band matters more than the router's advertised throughput, and so does distance through walls. The 4K Max supports the newer Wi-Fi standard, which mostly helps in congested homes with many devices rather than by raising the ceiling on a single stream.

Check scope before you buy new hardware. One channel failing is a single source. A whole group failing while everything else plays is server-side and no device upgrade repairs it. Everything stalling at the same hour every night is congestion, either your connection at local peak or capacity sold beyond what a provider can serve, and the second is outside your control. The fastest test costs nothing: switch away from the stuck channel and back. If it plays, the session stalled and bandwidth was never the cause. This is also why a published uptime figure matters, 99.99% being about 53 minutes across a year.
